The Job

Reporting to the Finance Manager, the role will play a key role in developing and delivering financial support to the Service Charges Team. Leading on rent and service charges for the Group, the role will oversee the annual rent and service charges budget setting and ensure the notice and annual accounts are issued.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the service charge finance function, ensuring all service charges and rents are set in accordance with relevant regulatory requirements and legislation
  • Provide effective rent, service charge and s20 support, advice, and information to budget holders, managers, and staff across the group
  • Lead the annual rent setting process and be a key contributor to the annual rent increase report
  • Advise the development team on rents and service charges of new schemes
  • Proactively work with other business areas to reduce costs and drive through Value for Money
  • Be a key player in ad-hoc service charge projects and business transformation, including areas of service charge under-recovery
  • Business Partner to budget holders, to prepare information for management accounts, discuss variances, and ensure control account reconciliations are performed
  • Prepare the SDR return and input into relevant sections of the annual statutory accounts 

The Person

  • You will be a part or fully qualified accountant with experience gained in service charge accounting. You will need technical expertise of service charges with a working knowledge of relevant legislative environment for service charges including the Rent Standard and the Landlord and Tenants Act 1985
  • You will have good all round accounting experience of management accounts, balance sheet and control account reconciliation, and the natural ability to communicate and support the budget holders and wider service charge team with the production of timely financial management information, budgetary review, and variance analysis
  • You will have a curious nature to be able to challenge existing processes/practices and design and implement service improvements and have the drive to look at continual improvements across the rents & service charge area
  • You will be able to build effective relationships with internal colleagues in property services, housing management, and development, and have developed excellent customer service skills to communicate with both tenant and leasehold customers
